New Holsten brewery site: A milestone for the Holsten brewery

After 140 years, the traditional Holsten Brewery in Hamburg-Altona has moved to a new location on Holstenstrasse. The decision to relocate was made by the Danish Carlsberg Group, Holsten’s parent company. The new brewery complex was officially opened in November 2019 and features an impressive high-efficiency lauter tun brewhouse.

After a long search for a suitable location, the brewery chose the Heykenaukamp industrial estate in the Hausbruch district on the opposite side of the River Elbe. The new site offers optimum logistical connections and is free of residential areas, which rules out conflicts with residents.

Ziemann Holvrieka GmbH was chosen as a long-standing partner for the construction of the brewhouse. Cooperation in the development of brewing technologies and equipment created confidence in the company’s capabilities. The lauter tun brewhouse includes two mashing systems, a lauter tun, a wort boiling system and a hop dosing system.

Construction began in October 2017, followed by installation of the brewhouse in July 2018. In order to bring in the brew vessels, they were placed before the building was completed. After installation and commissioning, the first test brew took place on July 30, 2019, with the official inauguration taking place on November 4, 2019. The new Holsten Brewery covers an area of 25,000 square meters and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to produce up to one million hectoliters of beer per week.

The relocation was necessary because the capacity in Hamburg-Altona had not been fully utilized for many years. With the new brewery, Holsten has now created an efficient and future-proof production facility to meet increasing demands.
